How to play Timeline
Timeline is a free online timeline game where you put historical events in order, like the Timeline and Chronology card games, with over 2,000 events from the pyramids to the iPhone. Every round goes like this:
- Read the event on the card. Its year is hidden.
- Drag it to its spot on the timeline, before or after the cards already there.
- Right: the card stays and shows its year. Wrong: you lose one of three lives, and the card moves to its real place.

Like the Timeline card and board game, in your browser
Love timeline card games? This brings the feel of Timeline by Asmodee, Chronology by Buffalo Games and Anno Domini to your browser. No cards to shuffle and no setup. The events cover world history, science, inventions, art, sports and pop culture. Unlike daily timeline games such as Chronle or NYT Flashback, you can play as many games as you like, and every game is new.
Scoring and medals
Every card you place right counts as one point. One right card wins bronze, ten win silver and twenty win gold. A streak counter shows how many you got right in a row. Your best score is saved in your browser, so you can try to beat it.
Tips
Use the cards already on the timeline. If it holds the first powered flight and the Moon landing, and you get the first television broadcast, it probably goes between them. Ancient events are older than most people think: the Great Pyramid is closer in time to the iPhone than to the first farmers.
Want to name the year itself? Try Guess the year, where you drop a pin on the year an event happened and score up to 5,000 points a round.
What is Timeline?
Timeline is a free online history game from The Chronology Game. You get a historical event without its year and place it on a timeline, before or after the events already there. Get it right and the card stays. Get it wrong and you lose one of three lives.
Is Timeline the same as the Timeline card game?
Similar idea, different game. The Timeline card game by Asmodee and the Chronology board game use cards you buy. This is a free web game with its own set of over 2,000 events. If you like Timeline, Chronology or Anno Domini, you will probably like this.
Is Timeline like NYT Flashback or Chronle?
Yes, the same idea: put historical events in order. NYT Flashback and Chronle give you one puzzle a day; Timeline lets you play again and again, with three lives and a score to beat.
How does scoring work in Timeline?
Your score is the number of cards you place correctly. One correct card wins bronze, ten win silver and twenty win gold. Your best score is saved in your browser.
Why was my Timeline card wrong when the year looks right?
The game checks the order, not the exact year. If a card belongs between 1955 and 1957 and you put it after 1957, it is wrong, even if its year is 1956. A wrong card still moves to its real place, so you can see where it goes.
Can I play Timeline on my phone?
Yes. Drag the card onto the timeline, or tap the + button to pick a spot with arrows. You can also install the game on your home screen.
Can I challenge a friend in Timeline?
Yes. At the end of a game, press Share. Your friend opens the link and gets the same cards in the same order, with your score to beat. On one device, press Play as Player 2.
Can I stop a Timeline game and come back later?
Yes. Your game is saved in your browser after every card. Open the game again and press Continue.
Is Timeline good for school?
Yes. Timeline is a quick history game for students: it trains a sense of what came first, and the events are family friendly. Teachers use timeline games as warm-ups and for revision.
Are the years in Timeline accurate?
We try. Some events span several years and some dates are disputed, so we use the most commonly cited year. If you think one is wrong, tell us.
Is Timeline free?
Yes. No account, no download, no ads, no paid lives.
