The Chronology Game
What is The Chronology Game?
The Chronology Game is a set of free online history games with over 2,000 historical events. In Timeline you put events in the right order. In Guess the year you drop a pin on the year an event happened and score up to 5,000 points a round.
Which Chronology Game should I start with, Timeline or Guess the year?
Timeline if you like card games such as Timeline or Chronology: you only need to know what came first. Guess the year if you want a bigger challenge: you name the year itself, and every year closer earns points.
Is The Chronology Game a history quiz?
Yes, two kinds. Guess the year is a history quiz where every year closer earns points. Timeline is history trivia about order: what came first. Both are free, with over 2,000 events to play.
Is The Chronology Game like Chronle or NYT Flashback?
Close cousins. Chronle and NYT Flashback give you one daily puzzle; here you can play as many games as you like, any time. Timeline is closest to them: put events in order. Guess the year asks for the year itself.
Is The Chronology Game free?
Yes. Both games are free, with no account, no download and no ads. Your best scores are saved in your browser.
Can I play The Chronology Game on my phone?
Yes. Both games work in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. You can also install the game on your home screen like an app.
How many events are in The Chronology Game?
Over 2,000, from the first temples to the last decade, across world history, science, inventions, art, sports and pop culture. We add more regularly.
Is The Chronology Game good for kids and classrooms?
Yes. The events are family friendly, and both games work well for history lessons, quizzes and family game nights.
Are the years in The Chronology Game accurate?
We use the most commonly cited year. Some events span several years and some dates are disputed; Guess the year gives those a wider margin. If you think a year is wrong, tell us.
Can I play The Chronology Game with friends?
Yes. Multiplayer lets you play Guess the year live with friends: create a party, share the link or the 5-letter code, and everyone guesses the same events. Free, no account.
Timeline
What is Timeline?
Timeline is a free online history game from The Chronology Game. You get a historical event without its year and place it on a timeline, before or after the events already there. Get it right and the card stays. Get it wrong and you lose one of three lives.
Is Timeline the same as the Timeline card game?
Similar idea, different game. The Timeline card game by Asmodee and the Chronology board game use cards you buy. This is a free web game with its own set of over 2,000 events. If you like Timeline, Chronology or Anno Domini, you will probably like this.
Is Timeline like NYT Flashback or Chronle?
Yes, the same idea: put historical events in order. NYT Flashback and Chronle give you one puzzle a day; Timeline lets you play again and again, with three lives and a score to beat.
How does scoring work in Timeline?
Your score is the number of cards you place correctly. One correct card wins bronze, ten win silver and twenty win gold. Your best score is saved in your browser.
Why was my Timeline card wrong when the year looks right?
The game checks the order, not the exact year. If a card belongs between 1955 and 1957 and you put it after 1957, it is wrong, even if its year is 1956. A wrong card still moves to its real place, so you can see where it goes.
Can I play Timeline on my phone?
Yes. Drag the card onto the timeline, or tap the + button to pick a spot with arrows. You can also install the game on your home screen.
Can I challenge a friend in Timeline?
Yes. At the end of a game, press Share. Your friend opens the link and gets the same cards in the same order, with your score to beat. On one device, press Play as Player 2.
Can I stop a Timeline game and come back later?
Yes. Your game is saved in your browser after every card. Open the game again and press Continue.
Is Timeline good for school?
Yes. Timeline is a quick history game for students: it trains a sense of what came first, and the events are family friendly. Teachers use timeline games as warm-ups and for revision.
Are the years in Timeline accurate?
We try. Some events span several years and some dates are disputed, so we use the most commonly cited year. If you think one is wrong, tell us.
Is Timeline free?
Yes. No account, no download, no ads, no paid lives.
Guess the year
What is Guess the year?
Guess the year is a free history game from The Chronology Game. You see a historical event and drop a pin on the year you think it happened. The closer your pin, the more points, up to 5,000 a round and 25,000 for a game of five rounds.
What games is Guess the year like?
It plays like GeoGuessr, with time instead of places. Photo games such as TimeGuessr and Chronophoto come close, and so do timeline games such as the Timeline card game and Timdle. Daily year games such as Yeardle and Which Year are close too, but give you one puzzle a day. Guess the year uses historical events instead of photos, and asks for the exact year instead of the order.
Is Guess the year easy or hard?
Both. Pick Modern for easier history trivia from 1900 to today, Old for a hard one with events before 1500, or Balanced for a mix. Scoring is fair either way: being 10 years off counts for less the older the event.
Does Guess the year cover world history and US history?
Yes. The events span world history from 10,000 BC to today, with many from US and UK history, plus science, inventions, art, sports and music. Pick topics before you start to play only the ones you like.
How are points counted in Guess the year?
Points depend on how far off you are compared with how long ago the event was. Ten years off is a lot for something from last century but very little for something from ancient Egypt. Only the exact year gives the full 5,000.
Can I challenge a friend in Guess the year?
Yes. At the end of a game, tap Share. Your friend opens the link and plays the same events with the same rules, then sees who won. On one device, tap Play as Player 2.
Can I use Guess the year for a history quiz night?
Yes. Play on one screen and take turns, or send everyone the same challenge link: all players get the same events and rules, and the scores show who knows their history best.
Can I change the rules in Guess the year?
Yes. Pick 5, 10 or 20 rounds, or Endless. Choose random, balanced, modern or old events, a timer of 30, 10 or 5 seconds, and the topics you like.
Can I type the year in Guess the year instead of using the timeline?
Yes. Open the settings menu (the gear) and turn on Type the year under Accessibility.
Is Guess the year free?
Yes. No account, no download, no ads. Your best score is saved in your browser.
Multiplayer
Is Guess the year multiplayer free?
Yes. It is a free online multiplayer game: no account, no app and no download. Invited players join free with the link or the code.
How many players can play Guess the year multiplayer?
From 2 to 20 in one party. That makes it an easy game to play with friends at a house party or on game night: show the QR code, and everyone joins on their own phone. On your own? Add bots in the lobby and play against them.
Is Guess the year multiplayer like GeoGuessr multiplayer?
Yes, with years instead of places. Everyone sees the same event and pins a year, and the closest guess scores the most, up to 5,000 points a round. Duels work like GeoGuessr duels: you lose health when the other player is closer.
How do Duels work in Guess the year?
Duels is a two player game. Both players start with 6,000 health. Each round, the player who scores less loses the difference, and the hit grows every round (×1, ×1.5, ×2 and so on). The round has no timer until one player locks a guess; the other then has 15 seconds. A round with no guess ends after a minute. The first to 0 loses; after 20 rounds, the higher health wins. Everyone else in the party watches. Duels also suit couples who want a game to play online together.
Can I bet in Guess the year multiplayer?
Yes, in Live games. Once you have locked your year, tap any other player and bet: will they guess too early or too late? One bet a round, and you never see their guess, so the bet is about how well you know your friends. A right bet gives 500 points, a wrong one costs 500.
Is Guess the year multiplayer a trivia game?
Yes, a multiplayer trivia game online about history, with over 2,000 events from 10,000 BC to today. The host picks 5 or 10 rounds, a timer from 10 to 60 seconds, the mix of old and modern events, and the topics.
In the classroom
Do students need accounts to play The Chronology Game?
No. Nobody signs up, students or teachers. A student types a nickname in multiplayer, and that is all. Scores and settings stay in the browser on the student's own device.
Does The Chronology Game work on Chromebooks?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser on Chromebooks, tablets, phones and computers, with nothing to install. A school network only needs to allow chronologygame.com.
Can I show The Chronology Game on the classroom projector?
Yes. In multiplayer, open the big screen view on the projector: it shows the event, the timer and every guess on one timeline, while the students play on their own devices.
Can I turn off chat in a class party?
Yes. The host sets the chat to off, emotes only, quick phrases (tap a ready-made phrase, no typing) or text, and can change it during the game. The host can also mute or remove a player.
How many students can play one multiplayer game?
Up to 20 in one party. For a bigger class, students can play in pairs on one device, or you can run two parties.
Is The Chronology Game free for schools?
Yes. Both games and multiplayer are free, with no ads, no premium version and no sign-up.
