Accessibility

Last updated: November 2026

We want everyone to be able to play The Chronology Game: in class, at home, with a mouse, a keyboard, a touch screen or a screen reader. We aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The site has not had an outside audit yet, so this page says what works and what we know is still hard.

What works

  • Keyboard play. In Timeline, press Enter or Space on the card to open the place picker, move with the arrow keys and press Enter to place it. In Guess the year, the arrow keys move the pin on the timeline.
  • No dragging needed. On a phone, tap the card or the + button to choose a spot from a list instead of dragging it.
  • Type the year. Rather type than move a pin? Turn on Type the year in the settings (the gear).
  • Screen readers. Results are read out in one status line, the final score is the page heading, and focus moves to the next step after each round.
  • Reduced motion. When your device asks for less motion, the games drop the confetti, the flying cards and the smooth scrolling.
  • No time pressure. Timeline has no timer, and the timer in Guess the year is optional. In multiplayer, the host can give up to 60 seconds a round.
  • Light and dark mode, and sound off. Both are in the settings, and the game follows your device's light or dark setting at first.

What is still hard

  • The Spread in multiplayer, which shows every guess on one timeline, is mostly visual.
  • The chat in multiplayer moves fast in a big party. The host can turn it down to emotes or quick phrases, or off.
